WINE SPECTATOR: 17 Affordable Italian Reds

Nuove degustazioni di Nebbiolo, Dolcetto e Barbera: Nebbiolo d'Alba DOC Giaculin 2012 90 punti, Bruce Sanderson. Piedmont, located in the foothills of the Alps in northwestern Italy, is justifiably known for its world-class Barolo and Barbaresco. Yet the region is also home to other excellent wines made from Nebbiolo, as well as Barbera and Dolcetto grapes. These offer good value and can accompany a wide range of foods, especially dishes with tomato sauces, such as pasta and pizza. Many are priced reasonably enough to enjoy every day, just as the locals do. GIOVANNI ROCCA Nebbiolo d'Alba Giaculin 2012 Score: 90 | $17 Cherry, tobacco and leather aromas and flavors highlight this juicy red. Raspberry and floral accents add depth, giving this the structure to develop over the short term. Drink now through 2020. 200 cases imported. —B.S.
